7 first date tips - including what to say, where to go and should you pay?

Relationships

Whether you met online, at work or in a coffee shop, first dates can be tricky, so to get you through, we've compiled a list of guidelines ahead of the big day (or night)!

Perhaps you've just joined a dating site and are looking to meet someone soon.

Either way, nothing can quite prepare you for that awkward first meet - especially if you've not met each other in person before.

Whether it's your first date in a while, or your third one this week, banish those nerves with our 10 tips to getting you through.

1. Be decisive

Can't decide on where to go?

Avoid hemming and hawing all night - it's unattractive and can be annoying.

If your date suggests some ideas and asks for your opinion - pick one.

2. Jokes are good

Got some funny stories to tell? Go for it.

One of the top things people look for in a lover is someone that can make them laugh.

3. Avoid your ex

Don't talk about your ex on your first date - no-one wants to hear it and it looks like you're not over them.

4. Talk about yourself...but don't overdo it

It's fine to talk about your hobbies, talents, job etc, but make sure the conversation is two-way - you don't want to bore them.

If you're one of those who just can't stop talking/talk a lot when nervous, try and finish every sentence with 'how about you'?

5. What should I wear?!

It depends on where you are going - as a rule, casual works for anything outdoorsy while dressy works for nights out.

If in doubt or it's a surprise, opt for smart casual - jeans and a shirt/dress and flats.

TIP for men: Avoid t-shirts and trainers - it looks like you haven't made the effort.

TIP for Women: Remember your make-up bag and avoid wearing heels if you can't walk in them!

6. Avoid awkward silences

So you've sat down, and drinks are on their way - what's next?

Time to start talking! If you're prone to awkward silences on first dates, do some research ahead of your meet-up?

The trick is to find something in common - after that, the conversation will just flow.

Ask friends or check out their dating profile for clues as to what they're into - music and travel are a good place to start.

7. Uh, who's paying?

Man: Chances are, she's expecting you to cover it, so, if you're happy to, tell her "you've got it" and go ahead.

Woman: If he says "he's got it" take it as a positive and say thanks - if you genuinely want to pay - make a point of this and say it.

Can't decide: Feeling awkward about who's paying? Just split the bill and change the subject.
