'My daughter stopped using nappies at two weeks old and is already toilet trained'

A mum and dad say their daughter hasn't used nappies since she was two weeks old and is now fully potty trained just nine months later.

Australian parents Montana Lower and Tom Lindwood explained that they use a method called 'elimination communication' (EC).

This involves looking out for signs that your baby needs the toilet and taking them, which they say bypasses the need for a nappy and enforcing a learned behaviour.

Dad Tom says parents are able to recognise cues for when their child is hungry, and the same technique can also be used to know when they need to go to the toilet.

In a video on YouTube, Montana said she thought the idea was 'crazy' at first but it's meant they haven't had to buy nappies since their daughter Blue was just two weeks old.

She said it took only one day of Tom "really committing" to taking her to the potty every time she looked like she might need to go for Blue to become toilet trained.

Since that day, Montana says Blue will look to them when she needs to go to the toilet and they take her to the potty.

"Babies are born with absolutely no preconceived knowledge of how to go to the bathroom and so if we don't teach them to go in their nappy, then we don't have to unteach them," she said.

"It just makes a lot of sense to just straight up say 'we go to the toilet this way'."

The couple added that nappies are a fairly new 'luxury item' and EC is better for the environment, saying they used a Tupperware container at first before switching to a potty.

They said: "We recommend setting aside one day, Blue took one day to learn she needed to go toilet in the Tupperware container. Then after that it was up to us to read the signs."

Montana added: "After that you could tell Blue is like 'I go to the potty now, take me to the potty'.

"Which was really sweet because she was two weeks old when that happened, and it blew our minds."

Tom said he "highly suggests" other parents use the method and added there is plenty of material online for those wanting to research more about 'elimination communication'
