Why you should tip your hairdresser

Living

money

It is not a new phenomenal but to some of us, it is not a rule – tipping. It is a custom that allows you to show gratitude for a job well done and is more common in restaurants. In the salon, however, not many people think it is an important venture.

Tipping is at your discretion but it is a good gesture. Everyone wants the best personal care when they visit a salon; once you get it, it is good to say thank you.

One thing that bothers some people, however, is how much to tip. There is no fixed amount that one should tip but a general rule is that it should be somewhere between ten and 20 per cent of the total cost of service. Most people, I know, will tip between Sh50 and Sh100 regardless of the service they receive. But I would suggest that you decide how much you want to tip; look at it as a 'thank you for doing my hair so well' gift.

Whether you tip or not, is determined by the relationship you have with your salonist; the closer you are, the more the tip. You can even go to the extent of giving them a holiday gift; like now when we are headed to the Christmas festivities.

Another thing that determines how much you tip will be the location of the salon. There are salons in high end locations and malls, while there are those in local estate markets. Tipping will also depend on how well you have been treated in a salon. Some salons give you a 'home away from home' feel by offering you a drink, and the ambience is so comfortable that you will never be in a hurry to leave.

Who should you tip? When you go to the salon, there will be a shampoo person, the receptionist, your stylist and even the salon manager. It would be polite to tip each one of them. If you can afford a salon with top notch service, then it is just prudent that you sacrifice and give the tips.

There are times your hair is done and you feel there is need to go back and have it adjusted. So you go back to the salon the following day. It is not necessary to tip for that service, but you can do it if you so wish. Your stylist should, however, not assume that he/she will receive a tip.

Enjoy the tipping experience but remember it is really a personal decision. A tip is never factored in the prices of the service you receive in the salon and should absolutely be seen as an 'extra'.
