The things we do for sex, things we do when sexually starved! They can amaze you. Men can vumilia, but what about women? Some would walk in soggy gumboots to dead cold South Pole if need be.

Just consider women in Kiambu County. Early this year, they held demonstrations and threatened to relocate to more ‘productive’ regions of the country, like Kakamega, where there is a steady supply of many ‘Omundu Strong’. Their grouse was over their men’s dismal performance in matters ‘bedminton.’

They perpetuated the perception that men from Central Kenya need inter-denominational prayers to help them pandisha bendera.

Combing through findings in the 2014 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS) does little to redeem the image of men, and not necessarily those from Central Kenya.

The survey revealed that Kenyan divorcees, widows and widowers are having a field day in matters bedroom than their married counterparts.

Another shocker: In North Eastern, a region where matters sex are least discussed, sisters there are having more sex...wait for it...than their men! How? I hear you ask. Yes. How?!

The survey also revealed that sexual activity for both men and women differ according to the setting, whether in rural or area. Women and men in urban areas were more likely than those in rural areas to report being sexually active in the four weeks that preceded the survey.

While sexual patterns change regarding  women and their levels of education and wealth, no such evidence was found among men.

‘Sponsors’ lungula more than young jamaas

Men toughing it out in their 40s are more sexually active than those still trying to figure out their confusing 20s. The survey revealed that 79 per cent of them have more sex in a month compared to 39 per cent in the 20s.

The same applies to women. While you would expect women in their exciting 20s to be more sexually curious, it is 69 per cent of women in the 35-39 age bracket who are having all the fun, compared to 63 per cent of those who are sexually active and in their 20s

Arnold Omondi, a 25-year-old university student, says the findings are not a shocker given that women are after men who are rich. “Do not be fooled that these men are sleeping with their wives as they sleep around with our potential girlfriends. Only few of us at this age have money to splash on these girls unlike our older counterparts,” lamented Arnold.

Divorcees are sexually satisfied

The report reveals that the longer one is married, the lesser the chances of lungula as those marking their Silver Jubilees have lesser sex at 72 per cent, compared to those who have been married for between 15 and 19 years. Those who have been married more than once seem to be having the most fun as they top the list at 83 per cent.

Ann Njeri, a divorced mother of three, agrees that once one has been married before, they tend to be more sexually active.

“Of course, sex life gets boring when you have one partner, but you tend to appreciate it more after separation. Most divorced people have multiple sex partners to satisfy their needs. It’s not about the money, but pleasure. One is never enough and also we fear commitment,” she disclosed.

More money, more sex...for men

While most people assume that wealthy people are too busy closing deals, 61 per cent of men had more sex compared to 53 per cent of equally wealthy women. Of the lower class, only 20 per cent had sex during the period covered by the survey compared to only 13 per cent of women in the same class. Indeed, there is no romance without finance.

However, Cynthia Otieno, a relationship expert, differs with the findings of the survey. According to her, “The so-called poor people are having a lot of sex and it’s evident from the children they pop every year. They just can’t admit it since most of them are not very well educated and are ashamed to share such information. Some rich people could also lie just to make their lives seem perfect.”

School dropouts have more sex Interestingly, 64 per cent of people who only managed primary school level education have more sex in a month compared to those who have completed their secondary school and higher education (50 per cent). They are closely followed by those who have never stepped into a classroom (58 per cent).

Sex, to some people, offers some sense of entitlement, says psychologist Dominic Mwangangi of Sheldon Centre in Nakuru.

“Lack of education can push a man to believing that having more sex makes him a hero. It’s all in the mind. These are the same people who are at risk of getting sexually transmitted diseases due to lack of basic education,” Mwangangi told The Nairobian.

North Eastern dudes are sexually starved

Nairobi and Central Kenya lead in the level of sex activity as 55 per cent of women sampled had sex in the four weeks preceding the survey, while city men also proved to have been jogoos at 61 per cent.

The same cannot be said of residents of North Eastern, where only 37 per cent of men reported activities regarding sex compared to women in North Eastern  at 48 per cent.
