Hospital performs abortion on wrong woman

Living

A woman in South Korea woke up to a rude shock when she discovered doctors had performed an abortion on her without her consent.

The unnamed woman, reports say, went to the clinic for a routine nutritional shot when the unthinkable happened.

According to police, the woman’s file got mixed up with that of a patient who had gone in for an abortion. Instead of the shot she was to receive, she woman was anaesthetised and the abortion performed.

The woman was six weeks pregnant.

While it is illegal to carry out abortions in South Korea, the country’s Constitutional Court in April overturned the law, giving parliament until December 2020 to change it.

Under the current 66-year-old law, procuring an abortion is punishable by a year of imprisonment or a fine of Sh173, 000 ($1,670). This law however, only permits abortions in cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s health is at risk.
