I was swollen from toxaemia, spent many days in ICU: Beyoncé opens up about her pregnancy struggles

Pregnancy

Beyoncé has opened up on the pregnancy struggles she had to deal with when expecting twins Rumi and Sir. In a series of personal essays in September’s US Vogue magazine, the Superstar revealed she had to go through an emergency Caesarean Section to deliver her twins.

She further disclosed that she was swollen from toxaemia and had to be on bed rest for over a month. "I was 218 pounds the day I gave birth to [daughter] Rumi and [son] Sir. I was swollen from toxemia and had been on bed rest for over a month, “she said.

Toxemia, also known as preeclampsia, is a common condition in which a woman in late pregnancy develops high blood pressure and protein in the urine. Possible complications including bleeding, premature separation of the placenta from the uterus, rupture of the liver, stroke and, though rare, death.

The US singer further admitted that she was in the Intensive Care Unit and her husband, rapper Jay Z was a strong support system for her. The 36-year-old also admitted to having fuller arms, thighs, breasts and shoulders, after giving birth to her twins and she has come to love them. She also has a little mommy pouch which she is in no rush to get rid of.

The mother of three will be gracing the September’s US Vogue magazine cover. Her photo is the first Vogue cover to be shot by an African American photographer.
