Human hair weaves like Brazilian, Peruvian, among others, are meant to be used over and over again once removed. This hair is strong and versatile and, if cared for and stored properly between installations, can remain beautiful for the longest time possible.
Many women wear weaves to achieve a quick, new look, but when the weaves are not in use, they require the care similar to the one given to real hair. Poor storage could lead to tangles and matting, which could shorten their lifespan.
It is important that every woman learns how to clean and store their weaves properly to preserve them and save money. Here is how:
• Wash and condition:
If you have been removing your weave and locking it up in a cabinet without cleaning it, you are shortening its lifespan. Storing weaves in a clean state is crucial and marks the first step to storage. Shampoo the hair carefully to remove all the dirt and grit. You can either wash it thoroughly while on your head, or remove it first then wash.
Cleaning the hair prevents discolouration, which can be caused by some styling products. Certain hairsprays, gels and other products when left on the weave for long, can turn yellow and make the weave attract dirt and dust more easily. Some products also become ‘gummy’ over time, resulting in tangles and knots in the weave.
Products normally stick at the base of the weft and it requires careful examination to ensure all the build-up is removed. Washing the hair also ensures there is no germs that develop from excess product left in the hair.
• Dry and detangle:
Before you store the weave, ensure it is completely dry and detangled. Storing the hair when wet could lead to mould, mildew and a foul smell after just a short duration of storage. To ensure that the weave is completely dry, hang the wefts on a clothes line or hanger to air dry or lay them flat on a towel. You could also use a blow dryer ensuring the weave dries in the shape it was when you first had it on.
• Storage:
Your freshly shampooed and conditioned weave should be stored in a cool dry place. Ensure the storage is away from sunlight as sun rays fade the locks. Your storage container should be large enough to hold the hair in its shape.
Ensure you place them as flat straight and neat as possible. You could also store the weave in your closet on a hanger or in a drawer as long as the hair is not disturbed and the closet remains dry. Allow the weave to have enough air circulation so that it does not get the smell of whatever surrounds it. Another option is to store your clean, dry, weave in plastic bags or a plastic storage container.
Pick a container that is large enough to provide adequate space for the extensions to breathe and remain neat. Ensure, however, that you use a sufficiently sized package so that the hair doesn’t get handled roughly. Place it into the packaging in a neat and tidy arrangement.
With these steps, you are assured of fresh extensions ready for reuse whenever you want.
