A women-only cycling event dubbed Pedal-Mania will be taking place in Nairobi on May 12 to mark Mother’s Day. This marks a return of the cycling event that was last held in 2021.
The race will offer women cyclists of all skill levels the opportunity to participate in a friendly yet competitive environment. It will consist of individual time trials, where participants race against the clock on a designated course.
This format not only ensures a safe and controlled environment but also allows each cyclist to challenge their personal best and experience the thrill of competitive cycling.
Pedal-Mania was started in 2015 by the 1,000 rides cycling group as a monthly cycling event to promote cycling among women in Kenya. In 2016, the first Pedal Mania LITT was held on May 8, which was Mother’s Day.
In 2024, Rona Riders have taken the mantle to revive the race. “Our initiative stems from a desire to promote gender equality and empower women in the field of sports, particularly in cycling.
"As a club deeply committed to fostering inclusivity and diversity within the cycling community, we believe that organising such an event will not only celebrate the spirit of Mother's Day but also provide a platform for women to showcase their talents, strength, and determination,” says Jodee Misere, Rona Riders coordinator.
“We would be grateful for any financial contribution anyone; organisation or institution can provide to help us make this event a success. We welcome the opportunity to discuss potential partnership opportunities or sponsorship packages that align with your organisation's goals and values. To ensure the success of this inaugural event, we are seeking financial support to cover various expenses associated with race organisation,” she says.
