Since time immemorial girls have always played on the sidelines in the world dominated by men. Taught to be submissive and that our place was in the kitchen.
Denied opportunities and a voice to be powerful in society as our counterparts thrived, for a while this system worked until enough was enough.
Far from it, our place is not in the kitchen and now we want a piece of the pie and whatever it takes to break gender barriers and win, we will have it.
Gender inequality amongst many other reasons oppressing women, is the reason why women in technology are celebrated worldwide.
It is an initiative aimed at bridging the gender gap and providing equal educational and training opportunities for women around the world.
It’s no secret that women outshine boys in written exams but they don’t get to realize their goals due to lack of proper representation and opportunities.
It is for this reason that the Girls in ICT Day movement grows stronger every day to continue inspiring and creating awareness on the need to give girls and women opportunities in technology.
As it stands the world currently revolves around technology and this was realized during the pandemic when technology connected the world and online learning took the centre stage.
However, even as the world makes technological strides, half the population still remains offline and a majority being girls and women living in developing countries.
According to a report by the International Telecommunication Union, there is a 17 per cent gender gap in internet use globally and the gap is even wider in least developed countries.
This gap in some countries is worsened by systems modified specifically to deny girls and women the opportunity to access education, find better-paid jobs and start businesses.
And in line with helping girls and women realize their dreams, this year Girls in ICT day focuses on connecting girls and creating brighter futures.
As earlier mentioned, although girls may outperform boys their representation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) still remains low.
It is for this reason that this movement seeks to partner with gender equality champions to support, train and encourage girls and young women to venture in STEM careers.
