A mum-to-be who was slammed by her husband's family for her plans to name her son according to a tradition in her family has revealed her mother-in-law's deceitful plan.
The anonymous woman previously revealed on Reddit that she, 24, and her husband, 23, are expecting their first child in the coming months.
They will be welcoming a baby boy, and the expectant mum wants to call him Gaylord - Gale for short - as part of an old family tradition.
A year ago she had asked her husband whether he was happy to use the name, since it had been given to the firstborn son on her side of the family since the 1800s, and at the time, she said, he agreed.
But, with only a few months until her due-date, her hubby dropped a bombshell and told her he didn't like it and only wanted to have daughters with her to avoid it.
She said: "I never would have married him if he'd just told me he couldn't accept my family name.
"Now he won't even agree to any sort of nickname, or using it as a middle name, when he initially said it was fine.
"I feel like I've been unfairly pushed into a marriage and pregnancy that I never would have chosen if he had been honest with me."
With her marriage on the rocks and the couple unable to agree on a name, the mum-to-be felt as if she had no other option but to name her son by herself.
Her father assured her the law gave her the right to do so - but then her husband revealed his mother's bizarre scheme to ensure the name was never used for his son and to ensure her daughter-in-law only ever had female children.
The upset pregnant wife said: "He's really OK with Gaylord but was being shamed for it by his mother and felt torn between the two of us.
"My mother-in-law was under the ridiculous assumption that because my mother only had female children, that I would only be able to have female children, forcing the name to skip another generation.
"She fed him woo-woo nonsense about how to time intercourse, which crystals to put beside my bed, what foods to feed me, and to even keep the house really warm all to make it impossible for me to have a boy."
After the couple talked it through the wife said: "I can totally forgive how he felt kind of trapped under his mother's thumb all this time. I've seen how pushy she can be.
"We're cutting her out of our lives and living the way we want."
But Reddit users in the comments are still slamming her for the name, all agreeing that: "You don't have to name your child the way tradition dictates, right? It's your baby, not everyone else's. Pick a name you want!"
Another added: "If you name your child Gaylord, he will hate you and change it the second he turns 18."
