Kenya’s Gladys Cherono smashed her personal best and course record when she claimed her third Berlin Marathon victory on Sunday.

Gladys Cherono crossed the finish line first in 2 hours, 18 minutes and 11 seconds to win the women’s race at the 45th edition of the BMW Berlin Marathon.

“My target was to break he course record and improve on my personal best. I’ m happy to have set a new course record. The weather conditions were good and it made me run fast,” said a panting Cherono after the race.

She hopes to come back to race next year and hopefully break the course record, or another record again.

Cherono now has three Berlin Marathon wins under her name. She won in 2015 (2:04:00) and last year (2:03:32).

She started running in Spanish road races in 2004 and set a personal best, then, (2:11:19) to win the 2005 Media Maratón Santa Pola

Cherono broke into the elite ranks in 2012 and was third at both the RAK Half Marathon and the Prague Half Marathon, recording a best of 2:8:18 at the latter race. She took the 5000  and 10,000 metres titles at the Kenya Defence Forces Championships.

At the start of 2013, she won the Kenya Defence Forces Cross Country title, and ran a half-marathon, personal best of 1:06:48 to win the Prague Half Marathon

In September 2015, the second time competing at the marathon distance, she won the Berlin Marathon in 2:19:25.

Following her gold win in this year’s Berlin Marathon, Cherono will pocket about Sh 9.5 million; Sh 5.5million for winning gold and a bonus of Sh 4 million for running below 2 hours and 20 minutes.
