Carpets on the wall

One of the most elegant ways of displaying a carpet or a rug is hanging it on the wall. Note, however, that not just any carpet can be hanged on the wall. Oriental and Persian rugs make the best for this kind of display since they are lighter in weight, flimsy and one can easily sew a sleeve onto its back for ease of hanging. You can hang the rug freely on the wall, or have it secured to the wall from each side. • Get a piece of cloth and ensure its width is the same as that of the rug. Sew it on the back side of the rug, leaving openings on either ends for the pole to go through. The cloth should also be wide enough for a pole to fit. • The rod should be a few inches longer on both sides for it to fit into the wall brackets. You could decide to paint the rod a colour that you love; do so before you hang it up. You could paint only the ends, since the rest of the rod will be hidden beneath the rug. • Decide where you want to place your rug, ensuring it will hang in the middle of the wall. • If you don’t have wall brackets, you can now install them at spots you will have marked depending on the width of the rug. The brackets could be decorative depending on your taste. • Before you mount the rug, test the brackets by placing the rod on them to ensure the rug hangs levelled and the brackets are solid. You can then hang the rug. Smaller rugs can be mounted behind glass for a classic effect. Other methods of hanging rugs include framing them, or using Velcro for very lightweight and smaller rugs. How do you decide what rug is best for wall hanging? You may ask. Go for a rug that matches your room décor or has a design that represents your personality and has visual appeal. If you value beauty and sentimental appeal, the price of the rug will not matter. Persian rugs are the best because they are light, but tend to be expensive. You may, however, be lucky to come across a second-hand one. You can hang the rug on the wall in your hallway, above the sofa in the living room, or as a dramatic headboard in your bedroom, among other creative spaces you could think of. To give your rug durability and minimise fading from the effects of the sun, hang your rug facing away from direct sunlight.
