I am worried about my wedding night

Marriage Advice

Hi Chris,

I’m getting married soon, to a nice man. And please don’t laugh, but I’m getting worried about my wedding night! I want it to be so wonderful, and to create some lovely memories. But I’m just so nervous! What can I do to make sure everything goes well?

Nervous

Chris says,

Hi Nervous!

Everyone has such high hopes for their wedding night and dreams of mind-blowing sex. But for many the reality doesn’t meet their expectations at all.

Some couples spend the night in hospital with injuries from the dance floor. Some get so wasted there is no sex at all, for days, or they can’t remember it, or it is simply awful. Some couples get into such arguments that they spend their wedding night in separate rooms.

But lots do have a wonderful wedding night. All it takes is a little planning and realistic expectations. You don’t want to discover you only have your wedding clothes, so make sure your luggage makes it to your room. Arrange to have some food from the reception sent up to your room so you have something to nibble.

Look after each other during all the partying. You want to be relaxed and sociable, but not even slightly drunk. Flirt with each other all evening, dance close, and when you finally make it to your bedroom, be romantic and let him carry you into the room.

This ancient tradition was originally all about keeping a new bride safe from the spirits that lurk in doorways, but a belief arose that whoever first set foot across a couple’s new threshold would take charge of the relationship. So husbands started carrying the bride to ensure that it was them!

Once in your room, have a small snack, focus on enjoying each other, take a few moments to remember the wedding ceremony, and forget all about Hollywood-style wild passion. It’s not real. Instead, just relax, enjoy the moment, and let the sex happen all in its own good time.

All the best,

Chris
