Growing up, my grandmother always offered me crushed raw ginger to treat my sore throat, and her tea always had ginger added to it. Did you know that other than treating us and spicing up our tea and food, ginger can also spice up your hair?

It makes an excellent remedy for natural hair growth. It has essential vitamins and minerals that promote hair growth. When you use it as a hair treatment, it improves circulation and leaves your hair feeling tingly with a fresh smell.

Its benefits to the hair include:

• Ginger contains circulatory agents that stimulate the flow of blood on the scalp, increasing blood circulation, which triggers the hair follicles and encourages new growth. This way, it strengthens the hair from the root to the tip.

• Ginger has essential fatty acids, which prevent your hair from thinning. Ginger also cures dandruff since it has a natural antiseptic that controls scalp problems.

• If your hair is dry, ginger is an effective remedy. It also gives your hair natural shine.

Some ways to use ginger on your hair:

a. Get one fresh ginger root and peel it. Squeeze it to extract fresh juice from it. A tablespoon of this juice should then be added to olive oil or an oil of your choice in the same quantity.

Massage the mixture into your scalp and leave it on for about half an hour. You can then wash your hair using a mild shampoo. Practice this once or twice a week for best results.

b. Peel a few pieces of ginger root then blend the pulp with a little water to get a smooth paste. Pour the mixture over a thin cloth placed on top of a bowl to sieve out the juice.

Squeeze maximum juice from the cloth into the bowl. You can then apply the juice on your scalp. Let it stay on for 5-10 minutes. Use a mild shampoo to rinse it off.

c. Peel a few pieces of ginger then grate it. Add three tablespoons of sesame oil and three drops of fresh lemon juice. Apply the mixture on your scalp and massage gently. Leave it on for about half an hour then wash it off.

People who take ginger regularly in their tea or food are said to have healthy hair. Avoid using ginger if your scalp is broken or sensitive.
