Kenya has achieved gender parity in secondary and primary school examinations, this is according to Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu.
Announcing the 2022 KCSE examination results on Friday, CS Machogu said of the 881,416 candidates who sat for the examinations, 443, 644 were male while 437,772 were female, representing 50. 33 per cent and 49. 69 per cent of the total candidature respectively.
Machogu said 54,609 more candidates sat for the 2022 KCSE exam representing an increase of 6.60 per cent as compared to 2021 when a total of 826, 807 candidates sat for the exam.
He highlighted that 17 counties had more females enrolled than males.
"[Of the 47 counties] 14 had more male than female counties compared to 17 in 2021. These were Mombasa, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu, Turkana, Samburu, West Pokot, Kajiado, Narok, Homa Bay, Migori, Garissa, Wajir, and Mandera. 17 counties with high gender disparity in favour of female candidates during the 2022 KCSE examinations included Kiranyaga, Kiambu, Meru, Kitui, Thara Nithi, Vihiga and Kisumu," said Machogu.
According to the grade breakdown as attained by the candidates, Machogu said male candidates fared better than their female counterparts in the C plus category but the genders were at par in the other grade categories. Females, however, outdid their male counterparts in the C, C minus and D minus grades.
"271 girls and 875 boys score an A plain grade. 1,962 girls and 4,445 boys scored A minus. 6,104 girls and 9,578 boys got a B plus. B plain was attained by 13,520 boys and 17,783 girls respectively. 21,474 girls and 27,245 boys got a B minus while C plus was achieved by 33,138 girls and 36,950 boys. 49,191 girls and 45,963 boys scored C plain. C minus was attained by 62,599 girls and 56,469 boys. 70,238 girls and 64,783 boys scored a D plus; D plain 79,935 girls and 75,545 boys; D minus 8,4075 girls and 83, 683 boys. 12,760 boys and 18, 062 got an E," said Machogu.
As for the grade counts for candidates with special needs and disabilities in the 2022 KCSE Examination, the A plain grade was scored by only one boy. 2 girls and 7 boys scored A minus while 6 girls and 12 boys got B plus.14 girls and 19 boys scored B plain respectively.
B minus was attained by 20 girls and 28 boys. 53 boys and 28 girls scored C plus, while 84 boys and 48 girls had a C. 81 girls and 109 boys scored C minus while 127 girls and 154 boys got D plus. 231 girls and 255 boys scored D plain while 303 girls and 336 boys got D minus. 101 girls and 117 boys registered an E.
Of the 826,807 candidates who sat for the 2021 KCSE examination as announced by the then-Education CS George Magoha, A plain was scored by 789 boys and 349 girls. 3,819 boys and 2,154 scored an A-minus. 8,264 boys and 5,199 girls scored a B plus while 14,578 boys and 10,467 girls scored a B plain. 1,792 boys and 17,891 girls got B minus.
On the other hand, 30,817 boys and 29,026 girls scored C plus while 39,951 boys and 41,394 girls scored a C plain. 48,193 boys and 51,213 got a C minus, 57,849 boys and 58,506 (D plus), 72,007 boys and 73,909 girls scored Ds. Another 93,798 boys and 93,466 girls got a D minus while 26,578 boys and 19,573 scored an E.
421,318 of the candidates were boys while 405,559 were girls.
