We ladies love everything beautiful. If you have your own place, you want it to look like you have ‘arrived’. The first home means you are on their own, no one to dictate what you do, and you are earning some money (though not much).
These decorating tips will help you get off to a good start; whether it is an apartment or a servants’ quarter.
• Buy only what you love. There could be something you had yearned for in a long time and even saved some money for. This will be memorable in years to come. Second hand items should be your first love because they are affordable.
• This is the time to collect ‘memorables’ and knick-knacks. Second hand shops are the best place to collect knick knacks. If your job allows you to travel, collect some items. This way, you give your home depth and history that represent your adventures and the things you love.
• When buying furniture, go for versatile pieces. A sofa-bed, for example, will serve double functions just like an office desk can serve as your dining table.
• Go for bold colours in your tiny rooms. It inspires interest in your room.
Kitchen: With all the excitement, a girl’s first kitchen must be stylish. Go for neutral décor that you can easily change if situation demands. Some storage canisters for your grains and spices will make you feel like a real adult who has food and real places to store it. Buy many cereal bowls; a girl may just do with some cereal for breakfast.
Living room: Have a functional and chic living room. You need a decent place to sit as you watch TV. A comfortable couch would be ideal, especially because your girlfriends will crash on it when they visit. A simple clock on the wall says that you have taken charge of your life. Since you may not be in a position to afford a fancy display unit, a bookshelf would serve to display your collectibles and knick-knacks; items that will showcase your personality. Some wall art, which does not have to be expensive, will be a great idea for the empty walls. Since you may not be in a position to paint the walls afresh, get colourful curtains to give some life to the walls. A simple coffee table that will also serve as a dining table (You may not have the money and space for a dining table) will do. Many, at this stage, may not own a car but they will definitely have a television; get a simple shelf or TV stand for that. Alternatively, if space allows, hang the TV on your wall. A simple carpet will do for your floor; second hand ones are ideal. You may also go for supermarket carpets, some of which are very cheap.
Bedroom: Your safe haven is your bedroom. Your personality should shine through your décor. Get a dramatic full-length mirror for those moments you try on your outfits and dance in front of the mirror. A simple bed, a jewellery organiser and a shoe rack will keep your room neat.
