Thorn melon: The rich superfood (Photo: iStock)

Fruits tend to have an attractive exterior but thorn melon is one fruit with an intimidating exterior.

Its bright orange skin covered in spiky, horn-like protrusions, makes it unique. It has a jelly-like pulp which is sweet with a hint of tartness; a mix between cucumber and kiwi.

The taste is refreshing and exotic, making it a fantastic addition to fruit salads, smoothies, or simply enjoyed on its own. It originated in the Kalahari Desert and is indigenous in countries like South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.

This superfood has been cultivated for centuries not only for its taste but also for its numerous health benefits.

A single serving offers a significant dose of vitamin C, which boosts the immune system and promotes healthy skin. It's also rich in vitamin A.
