Man beats up Ruto supporter after election win

Living

A resident of Kayole's Soweto slum is out on a Sh100,000 bond and a surety of a similar amount after denying causing grievous harm to another on grounds that he was a supporter of President-elect William Ruto.

Dominic Owegi Owino allegedly beat up John Gitau Kimani on August 15 shortly after Ruto was declared the winner of the presidential election by Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati.

Makadara Chief Magistrate Francis Kyambia heard that Kimani was coming from a shop at around 8 pm when he encountered supporters of Ruto celebrating while those of Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Coalition's Raila Odinga were disappointed.

Owino and other Azimio supporters who were in a nearby bar are said to have pounced on Kimani and beaten him with wooden bars, claiming he was a Kenya Kwanza supporter. In the process, Kimani sustained injuries on his back and leg.

A Good Samaritan, who found him writhing in pain, contacted his wife who came in the company of his children and took him to hospital.

Following investigations, Owino was arrested by the police and taken to court where he pleaded not guilty.

The matter will be heard on January 30 next year.
