A man who was on condemned to the death row for 15 years has said he is ready to put his life on the line for President Uhuru Kenyatta.
He says Uhuru saved him from leaving prison in a coffin.
Michael Ochieng’ Odongo has already sold two acres of his land for Sh100,000 an acre and plans to mount a campaign to support Uhuru’s re-election in Kisumu, an ODM turf.
Omondi, 50, says it was the president’s intervention that saved him from the Nakuru Main Prison gallows and he is not afraid of going against the Opposition in two of the areas where ODM enjoys a near-cult following – Kondele and Nyalenda slums.
“I want to assure the president that I can guarantee him at least 3,000 through my campaigns in Kisumu. I am sure I can do this,” says the man who walked out of prison three months ago after staring at death for a decade and a half.
Omondi who was thrown into Nakuru Main Prison over a robbery with violence charge in 2001 says the president’s bold challenge to the Judiciary to fast-track justice gave him a second chance in life.
“I am not doing this to gain favours from him (President Uhuru), but I want him to know that I will get him 3,000 votes in Kisumu and I don’t mind if I become poor in the process. I am an industrious man and I can start afresh after Uhuru wins the presidency in the August elections,” he vowed.
Omondi who was first convicted by a Kericho magistrate court says he lost hope after losing appeals in the High Court and Court of Appeal. But following the promulgation of the new Constitution and the president’s challenge to the Judiciary, he was acquitted after a retrial.
He says he will work with Jubilee Party campaign team in the county in his campaigns. He is however categorical that his support for Uhuru does not extend to any other Jubilee candidates and is only limited to Uhuru’s August re-election bid.
“Already, 60 members of my family are solidly behind me and I have identified people who will help me push this agenda. There are people who strongly feel the government of Uhuru and Ruto has improved their lives and are willing to vote for them,” he says.
