A woman claims to have discovered the secret to improving your looks - drink more water.

Mother-of-two Sarah Smith claims drinking three litres of water a day took ten years off her face

After years of suffering headaches and poor digestion, the 42-year-old spoke to a neurologist and nutritionist and decided to undertake the month-long experiment.

Her before and after pictures appear to show a dramatic transformation in her face, which she credits to her increased water intake.

Wiriting in the Daily Mail, Sarah blames the "dark shadows under and around my eyes, a profusion of wrinkles and strange reddish blotches" on dehydration.

"My skin lacks any lustre," she adds. "It looks dead."

She said she was prompted to undertake the experiment after reading a recent survey suggesting that at least one in five women in the UK consumes less than the recommended daily intake of water.

"Every system and function in our body depends on water," she wrote.

"It flushes toxins from the vital organs, carries nutrients to cells, provides a moist environment for ear, nose and throat tissues, and eliminates waste.

"Not drinking enough means all these functions become impaired. So I decided to see how I would look and feel if I drank three litres of water every day for 28 days. The results were astonishing . . ."

But not everyone’s convinced of the benefits.

Skin doc Joshua Zeichner, MD, told Cosmo US: "There is no convincing data that eight [or more] glasses per day of water truly improves skin texture and tone."

In fact, he suggested the amazing results were simply down to good lighting.

But Dr Joe Cincotta, the man behind anti-ageing range Time Bomb, says dehydration can make skin suffer.

"It will look flat and show tiny, triangular fine lines… With age, skin’s ability to hold water decreases and dehydration is common," he said.
