Kipchumba Murkomen: My family is the centre of it all

I am married to my campus sweetheart Gladys and we have two boys and one girl.

I met my wife the day I joined campus and it was love at first sight.

She was my classmate and although she resisted my advances at first, I eventually had a breakthrough in my second year. We dated for six years before we got married.

I must admit that being a senator, and a family man, is a tricky balance.

It is actually tough. I love helping my children with homework and reading to them Bible stories, but sometimes my schedule does not allow me to do that.

But I always make sure if I am home on Sunday, I take the children to Sunday school and take the family for outings.

I am very lucky because Gladys is able to cushion the family from my busy schedule. She is my most valuable supporter. I also try my best to create quiet time, which I spend with my wife.

Fatherhood is a humbling experience. We don’t have perfect fathers in the world but I try to be a good one to my children. I am a disciplinarian because I have to guide the children on the right path.

I also protect and shield them from bad external and invasive habits. The modern individualistic way of bringing up children is a serious challenge. When I was growing up, nurturing children was a society’s responsibility.
