Hundreds of people have been displaced in nyakach following flooding after rivers awach, sondu miriu and nyando burst their banks. similar incidents have been reported in other parts of the country following weeks of persistent rains. so far, at least 300 families in the region have been displaced and many more remain marooned by the incident. residents have been forced to take refuge in nearby schools as they wait for help. the kenya red cross, which has been distributing food, water, mosquito nets and other items has warned that the number of people is set to increase. red cross officials are concerned about the danger of an outbreak of waterborne diseases. other regions affected by the floods include rachuonyo south, siaya and ugenya where an estimated 1,600 families living along river nzoia are in need of aid.
