Locals fear MPs will block views to Ligale team

Mombasa residents have expressed fears that MPs would interfere with their views and recommendations to the Interim Independent Boundaries Review Commission (IIBRC).

Led by Chama Cha Uzalendo (CCU) Chairman Maur Bwanamaka, the residents said the commission was a good gesture, but they feared MPs would scuttle their recommendations.

"We like what the commission is doing, but our fear is our recommendations will be interfered with by the MPs once they are tabled in Parliament," said Mr Bwanamaka.

The official also said there had been injustices in the way the constituencies have been created before, adding some were formed to favour politicians and influential people.

Proper representation

"Creation of constituencies was done in favour of politicians and influential people. It is about time we get proper representation and ensure boundaries are divided according to our recommendations," he said.

But another speaker from a human rights group, Mr Livingstone Nyando, said there was no need to increase constituencies, saying they should instead be reduced.

"I am proposing that constituencies be reduced to 94 instead of increasing them. Reducing the constituencies would boost the economy because the money used to pay MPs would be used to better education and health systems," said Nyando.
