Hi Chris,

My boyfriend and I have been together for quite a while, and so I have started wondering whether he might propose to me soon.

A friend told me that Christmas is a very popular time, so might that be a possibility?

Christmas Proposal

Chris says,

Hi Christmas Proposal!

Chances are your boyfriend won't even be thinking about proposing unless all your most important values are pretty much in sync. And you're in love with one another, of course! You should also both be confident and independent individuals who can keep each other's secrets, completely honest with one another, able to sort out your issues and disagreements, entirely open about each other's finances, and comfortably accepting each other as you are.

So do a little audit of your relationship against that list. If there are a few gaps, you shouldn't expect a proposal any time soon. You should also be completely and utterly faithful to one another, of course. Because you don't want to be married to someone you can't trust!

But above all, you should have already started talking about marriage. And in around seventy per cent of couples, it's the woman who mentions the subject first, even if you're both thinking about it. Very few guys will propose unless they're sure that their girlfriend is going to say yes. So if you're hoping that your boyfriend will propose over the holiday, make sure he knows that that's what you want!

After that, anything goes. Because a proposal doesn't need to take place somewhere spectacular for it to be the most memorable day of your life. And despite everything you've heard, most proposals take place at home. The second most popular place is your favourite restaurant, and after that somewhere beautiful out of doors that you love.

People do of course do the craziest things, like proposing at a public event or even on a billboard. But really, the simplest ideas are the best. At home, on a beach, in a park, or snuggling in front of an open fire...

All the best,

Chris
