Premature baby born at 23 weeks saved by putting him in a polythene FREEZER bag

A Premature baby born at 23 weeks was saved by putting him in a polythene FREEZER bag

Hospital staff put the baby born at 23 weeks in a polythene sleeping bag to mimic being in the womb. The baby was covered from the neck down in the liquid-filled freezer bag to improve his chances. Doctors do not normally resuscitate babies under 24 weeks gestation but told his mum that they would act if he showed signs of life.            The premature mite then faced a series of operations for numerous complications. He had three ops for a perforated bowel, suffered from fungal meningitis, chronic lung disease and a bleed to the brain. He also needed laser eye surgery after his eyes failed to develop properly.

The freezer bag was used to replicate the warmth of mum's womb, as premature babies are susceptible to hypothermia.

The bag comes up to the baby's neck and feeding and oxygen tubes are also used to keep the baby alive.

It is used in premature babies because they are too tiny and their skin is too thin for an incubator to provide the environment they need. Baby parents are now against abortion even at 24 weeks since babies in the womb demonstrated that by then they are a person. The baby,Connor was in Oxford’s John Radcliffe hospital for seven months. He celebrated his first birthday this month.
