ODM leader Raila Odinga’s wife Ida celebrated her 70th birthday during an event attended by the who-is-who in the political arena at her home in Karen, Nairobi on Saturday.

Prominent personalities in attendance were Jubilee Vice Chairman David Murathe, Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, Senate Minority Leader and Siaya Senator James Orengo and Central Organisation of Trade Unions Secretary General Francis Atwoli.

President Uhuru Kenyatta’s brother Muhoho was also present. The President did not attend the event but sent a congratulatory message.

Other attendees were former Nairobi Speaker Beatrice Elachi, former presidential hopeful Peter Kenneth and former Cabinet Minister Dr Paul Otuoma, among others.

Ida, who was born on August 24, 1950, said: “I feel so good at 70.”

She told The Standard that her journey, having to juggle between competing political interests in the country over the years, has been long and winding.

“It has been tough but with hope and God’s blessings, I have made it this far,” she said adding: “This is what has sustained my growth and made me overcome many challenges. I am looking at the future with renewed hope and optimism.”

Ida said she was happy with the big number of guests that turned up for the function, including those she had not invited.

“It shows how much people love me and my family and I am happy about it.”

The guests also had an opportunity to interact with Mr Odinga.

Later, Ida tweeted about the event after which social media was awash with congratulatory messages.

Goodwill messages

Former ODM chairman Henry Kosgey, who was her schoolmate at the University of Nairobi, wished her a long life.

Ida’s former classmate at UoN, who is also a former managing director of Sony Sugar Jonam Oketch, also sent his congratulatory message.

Later, a video emerged of Ida dancing the night away. In the video, the women who attended the celebration are seen dancing to the song Give It To Me by Akothee, featuring Nigerian artiste Flavour.

The venue had been decorated with white balloons. There was also a huge card with writings; “Happy birthday Ida Odinga.”

Ms Waiguru noted that Ms Odinga has played an important role in the development of Kenyan politics.

“Mama Ida, you are still young, strong, wise, graceful and selfless,” said the Kirinyaga governor.

She added: “Not many people know or understand the critical role you play in this nation. May God grant you many more years full of laughter and love.”

Homa Bay Woman Representative Gladys Wanga tweeted: “May God bless you and keep you as you serve humanity.”

Nominated MP Rose Nyamunga also wished Ms Odinga a long life.
