Maggie Gitu is a Marriage, family and sex therapist. She also writes a column on matters family and sex for Eve Woman. We got to chat with her on what she does on a daily basis and here is what she had to say:

What do you do when you are not at work?

I am reading something, like I am currently reading a French book to improve my French. If I’m not reading then I’m connecting with my friends at a restaurant with good food and music. I also like to go for a pedicure and manicure. I sing too!

How is your typical day as a sex therapist?

.

My days are not regular, sometimes I’m doing research on questions asked by clients, sometimes I am reading emails sent in by clients, other times I am seeing clients back to back.

What is the most awkward moment you’ve experienced as a sex therapist?

When clients think that I am going to examine them or engage in sex with them in order to teach them how to have better sex. It gets awkward and I have to clarify to them that that is not what sex therapists do!

What are your best moments at work?

When I speak with a client and they have that “aha!” moment, or when I follow up on clients and they report that they are doing well. It is fulfilling.

If you were not a sex therapist, what would you be?

I would either be an air hostess or a mechanic. Air hostess because I just love serving people and a mechanic because I’m intrigued by how things work.

How does your family take your job?

They are very supportive, in fact my mum is the one who encouraged me to enrol with her for a master’s degree in Marriage and family therapy. My sister is also very supportive.

If you were to be locked in a room for 10 days, what is the one thing you would take with you?

I would take my phone or my lip balm. I like high quality lip balms.

What would you say about your job as a sex therapist?

I find my work very fulfilling. People should not be afraid to go for sex therapy because it is essential, however, you should always ensure that your sex therapist is qualified. A sex therapist must have a Masters or a PhD.
