The 65th Grammy Awards saw a major milestone as Temilade Openiyi, better known as Tems, took home her first Grammy. The Nigerian singer, who rose to prominence with her collaboration on "Essence" with Wizkid, went on to collaborate with some of the biggest names in American music.
Tems won her first Grammy on Sunday night at the crypto.com Arena in LA, for her featured performance on Future's hit song "Wait for U," which also featured Drake. With this win, the 27-year-old singer became the first female Nigerian to receive a Grammy.
The song "Wait for U" samples Tems' track "Higher" from her 2020 debut album "For Broken Ears." "Wait for U" was released on May 3, 2022, and was the second single from Future's ninth studio album "I Never Liked You."
Tems was up against tough competition in the Best Melodic Rap Performance category, including Latto's "Big Energy (Live)," Jack Harlow's "First Class," Kendrick Lamar's "Die Hard," and DJ Khaled's "Beautiful."
Additionally, Tems has also been nominated for Album of the Year for her contribution to Beyonce's Renaissance and received an Oscar nomination for co-writing "Lift Me Up" for "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever." Meanwhile, Burna Boy, who was nominated for Best Global Music Album and Best Global Music Performance, unfortunately, did not take home any awards.
