Gone are the days when men jumped into the shower and five minutes later, they’re out ready to get dressed and dash out of the door.
In this day of social media, like it or not, we’re all judged according to our appearance. How you look will determine whether or not you will get that job or business deal.
Looking polished and put together goes beyond styling and smelling good.
Your hair plays a huge role in your appearance. Whether you want to tame your mane, hide some grays or keep your hair healthy and full, here are some tips worth checking into.
Get the right products
What you put in your head is super important. Whether you have curly, kinky or straight hair, buy products specifically formulated for those hair types.
Always factor in your hair needs when looking for hair products. From styling wax, dye to shampoos, do not make the assumption that all products work the same for all hair types.
Minimize heat
The general rule here is to use no heat at all. If you usually blowdry your hair, use a lower heat setting. And do not be tempted to overdo it.
The same rule applies when taking showers and washing your hair. Use lukewarm water to avoid stripping your hair of natural oils which will only lead to dryness.
Be gentle when drying
For some reason, men believe that the faster and harder they rub their head on a towel the quicker it will dry. While this might be the fastest way you can think of to dry your hair, it has adverse effects.
When your hair is wet it is weak and prone to damage. Rough rubbing using a towel that doesn’t have soft fiber will make your hair vulnerable causing breakage.
Take your time to pat your hair dry or leave it to air dry.
Moisturize
Once you determine your hair type, you will know how much moisture your hair requires. Regular use of a natural conditioner after a shampoo wash will nourish your hair and scalp.
If you have fine hair a leave-in conditioner will work best while a deep conditioning mask will give your thirsty hair the hydration boost it needs.
Hats off
If you can’t go out without wearing a hat you may have to make some adjustments or you may risk hair loss from friction alopecia. Look for loose fitting hats or skip headgear altogether. Tight fitting hats pull hard on your hair roots taking a toll on your strands.
Eat right
Foods rich in proteins, vitamins and zinc will give your hair all the proper nutrients your hair needs for good health. They will stimulate growth and good hair health. Eating right, getting enough sleep and exercise should be your daily goals.
Visit your barber
While you may do this from the comfort of your home, it is best to go to your barber every couple of weeks for regular hair care. This thereafter will save you time since you will have one less wash and condition. Your barber will also be able to advise you on a better hair care routine and products that would benefit your hair.
Keep it natural
Hair treatments like bleaching, perming and straightening is something men, just like women, are guilty of. Whatever your reason may be for changing up your hair, these procedures will cause more damage to your hair leading to breakage and dryness.
Maintain your hair in its natural state and only give it the nutrients it needs according to your type and hair needs.
