Fear as new STI hits Migori county

Fear has gripped Migori County following an outbreak of a Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) nicknamed ‘Jakadala’.

The infection is so dangerous that medics say it can kill within a week if not managed in time.

County Health executive Iscar Oluoch said her office has released officers to the ground after word went round that at least five people are being treated for the disease in different health facilities.

“We have sent surveillance teams to a private hospital in Awendo Sub-county, where it was reported that two patients had the disease," she said, adding that she could not confirm the outbreak.

“We called the administrator of the hospital and the clinical officer ...  our team will start from there,” Oluoch said.

According to the county official, the reports came from Nyarombo gold mines, a new area which has sparked a gold rush in Awendo Sub-county.

Other cases have been reported in Komito mines in Rongo Sub-county and other gold mining locations in Kuria, Suna and Nyatike.

Oluoch said the reports gained traction after a patient was admittd in Migori County Referral Hospital.

“The case we have in the referral hospital is not an STI, and the patient has been suffering for five years," she said.

She said the county is on alert with plans underway to have the national government and other partners offer help if the fears are confirmed.
