MURANGA, KENYA: Six policemen deployed to Nairobi ahead of Supreme Court ruling on September 1 have been admitted to a Muranga hospital over cholera.

The number adds to another ten officers who were on Sunday quarantined in a hospital in Rongai after showing cholera symptoms.

The ten officers were also part of a team that had been camping in hostels at the Multimedia University ready for action over the Supreme Court ruling.

Police said the ten victims started to complain of stomach pain and diarrhea before they were rushed to Sinai Hospital where they were admitted.

Cases of cholera emerged in Kenya by July with Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu blaming the outbreak on food handlers and water shortage.

Mailu noted that shortage of water was playing a major role in the spread of the disease, adding that a task force would be established to look into ways of stabilising supply. “When people start getting water from bowsers, carts, and other containers, then there is the risk of contamination. The disease spreads through water meaning, once a central water source is contaminated, everyone who relies on it is likely to get the disease,” said Mailu.
