Mnarani adds light to Kilifi

Kilifi might be a small town, but when it comes to tourist sites, it is second to none.

It is smaller than the oft-talked about Malindi, but ironically, it is the headquarters of Kilifi County.

Located between Mombasa and Malindi, its tourist attractions start right at Mtwapa Bridge, its border with Mombasa County.

Mtwapa itself, a much smaller town, is an entertainment hub with a vibrant nightlife. Because of that, many people always think it is part of Mombasa.

From the Mtwapa Bridge, one can watch boats on the Mtwapa creek, sailing to the sea and the glistening water itself just looks wonderful.

Further ahead is the Vipingo Ridge. It has some of the best golf courses.

The Kilifi Bridge itself is a marvel of the town and from it, one gets an unrivaled view of the Kilifi creek that has accommodation spots.

Overlooking the Kilifi Bridge, at the Kilifi creek sits a quiet spot for holiday lovers — Mnarani Beach Club in Kilifi.

Mnara is a Swahili word for tower and being by the seaside it loosely translates into a lighthouse.

From the main road, not much is visible of the expansive getaway, except the concrete wall lined with green vegetation, but once you start walking to the reception, you realise that there is more.

The tree-lined paved road that leads to grass-thatched structures within the compound tells you of the beauty that lies ahead.

On one side of the walkway is an open ground for fitness buffs. There is also a course for "crazy golf."

On the other side of the walk, not far from the gate is a spa for those who want to relax.

Those who want to take a dip can make use of the swimming pools. Mnarani has two.

Aside from Mnarani Club, there is also the Mnarani Monument on the steep creek overlooking the Kilifi Creek. It is believed that the monument was built in 13th Century by the Swahili settlers along the coast.

Another gem in the area is the Great Mihrab Mosque which is said to have the most inscriptions.

From Mnarani Club, one can watch motor boats and canoes move along the creek to and from the main sea.

This is where the breeze catches up with you. You do not need air conditioners as you enjoy your drink in the bar below.

Entertainment is also on offer and guests are treated to different genres ranging from traditional tunes from the local Giriama community to one man guitar performances.

There is an arena for traditional dancers and guests can join them in the fun.
