The Mugumo is a spiritual tree among the Agikuyu, and it is under the tree that Kambui Girls students in Kiambu gathered for evening prayers.

It seemed not to matter that the school had Presbyterian roots. And when the trees were cut down, the old girls- who remember the school for the fair, relaxed and helpful attitude of the administration - were livid.

Once a student entered the school gate, there was no leaving the compound, unless one was going home for school fee or midterm break.

Teenage pregnancies were unheard of, mainly because the girls were always counselled to delay any gratification until they were women of substance. And many did. They were also told to soar like eagles, as per their school motto.

The school traces its origin to the Gospel Missionary Society (GMS), which came to Kenya in 1889.

The Kambui Mission would be established in 1902 at the Kambui Hills. In 1945, the GMS and Church of Scotland Mission (CSM) merged to form the current PCEA (Presbyterian Church of East Africa).

In the 1960s, the girls’ school was established and has grown to become one of the best girls’ schools in Kiambu. The initial uniform was navy blue skirts and sweaters, with white blouses. Today they don light grey uniform.

Notable alumni include Nyeri County Women Rep, Priscilla Nyokabi, prominent family lawyer Judy Thongori, country musician Konkara Mwaniki, journalist Catherine Nasimiyu, Centre for Public Health and Development programme officer Nelius Rwamba, and Jane Wanjiru Muigai (nominated MP Isaac Mwaura’s fiancée) who is a senior legal advisor at the UNHCR in Geneva.
