Mary J. Blige, a proud native of Yonkers, New York, is not forgetting her roots as she achieves fame and success.

Recently announced as an inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Blige is using her platform to give back to the community that supported her beginnings.

Partnering with Pepsi, Blige is launching the "Strength of a Woman Festival and Summit" to empower and educate underserved women in Yonkers.

The initiative includes a $100,000 (Sh13.2 million) fund that will provide grants to local organisations dedicated to uplifting women.

Blige expressed her joy about the partnership, stating how it aligns with her mission of empowering women.

"It is so fulfilling," she told CNN. "It is everything that my movement is about. I always wanted to give back, especially to the women in Yonkers."

Known as the "queen of Hip Hop soul, Blige's early career was marked by songs reflecting her struggles with depression, substance abuse, and abusive relationships.

However, she persevered and found that her journey of healing could inspire and help others.

In 2022, Blige launched the "Strength of a Woman Festival and Summit", a multi-day event featuring panels, concerts, and fellowship.

The new fund, created in partnership with United Way of Westchester and Putnam, will support organisations promoting education, financial stability, and food security in the community.

Blige made a surprise appearance at Westchester Community College to announce the fund's launch.

This year, the festival and summit will take place in New York City from May 10-12, moving from its previous location in Atlanta.

Blige expressed excitement about returning to her hometown for the event, highlighting the support and enthusiasm from both New Yorkers and fans worldwide.
