Cinnamon spice is obtained from the inner bark of several tree species from the genus Cinnamomum. An aromatic condiment and flavouring additive in a wide variety of cuisines, cinnamon or madalasini in Kiswahili, is sold in sticks and powder form.
I like to add a pinch of cinnamon powder to my oatmeal porridge while cooking it. I use cinnamon sticks for a cold remedy passed to me by my aunt. One of my favourite treats is cinnamon flavoured mandazi specifically from vendors on the streets of Mombasa.
Cinnamon has several health benefits. Some studies show intake of cinnamon may cut the risk of heart disease, lower blood sugar levels, improve sensitivity to hormone insulin for type 2 diabetes and reduce bad effects of eating fatty foods.
Most major supermarkets stock powdered cinnamon in the spice aisle for about Sh90 for 50 grammes. Cinnamon sticks are not as readily available are available but if you find some, the fresher, the better.
