Vinegar, also known as white vinegar, is the clear liquid produced from the fermentation of ethanol. It is widely available in most supermarkets and very affordable. It has several uses around the home ranging from cleaning, to stain removal, and sanitizing.
Apart from cleaning salads, shining glass, safely whitening clothes, and disinfecting table tops, did you know that you can incorporate white vinegar into your beauty routine?
1. Nail care
Before you paint your nails, wipe them with vinegar, rather than nail polish remover. This removes any natural oils on your nails making the polish last longer. Once your nails are dry you can apply base coat and continue with your manicure.
2. Clean make-up tools
Mix an equal part of vinegar and water in a clean container. Dip your brushes, eyelash curlers, and any other beauty tools in this liquid for 5-10 minutes. Dab on a towel to remove any residue and allow tools to dry. Vinegar is a chemical free cleaner that sanitizes your tools. When dry, the smell disappears completely.
3. Natural deodorant
Mix 50 per cent of vinegar with 50 per cent water and put in a spray bottle. Spray on underarms. Alternatively, you can wipe your underarms with 100 per cent vinegar when needed. The vinegar will get rid of any body odor and the vinegar smell will vanish once it dries.
4. Sunburn
If you have sunburn spray the affected areas with undiluted vinegar. Keep reapplying as needed.
5. Cold sore remedy
Dab the cold sore with vinegar a few times a day to reduce the swelling and pain. It will also keep the area clean. Vinegar is also useful for insect bites as it relieves itching while soothing the irritated area.
6. Clear up acne
Dip a cotton ball in vinegar and dab on the affected area. The acidity in vinegar will dry out the pimple and restore the skin's pH levels. You may also make a toner of equal parts of water and vinegar. Apply on your skin once or twice a day, avoiding the eye area.
7. Mouth wash
Mix vinegar with water and use a mouthwash to kill bacteria. Avoid swallowing as white vinegar tends to be different from food-grade vinegar.
8. Foot soak
Soak two wash cloths in vinegar and wrap around your feet. Soak for 15 minutes and then proceed with your pedicure as usual. The vinegar helps to get rid of dry, flaky, or dead skin, while getting rid of any odor.
9. Razor burn remedy
Dab the area with vinegar to soothe irritated skin. The acid in the vinegar will also help ingrown hairs grow out more easily.
