Ways to spend quality time with your children

Parenteen

Despite our busy schedules, there is always a way to work around with spending time with our children.Whenever possible plan and schedule dates where you will spend quality time as family. Involve them in doing so and this will provide an opportunity for your child to look forward to that time as it approaches as well as enjoy it when it finally happens.

To get you started here are eight ways you can spend quality time with your child.

Morning and night time routines

If you plan yourself well and manage time properly you will be able to spare at least 15 minutes in the morning and night to enjoy with your children. In the morning you can do stretches together or make breakfast together as you talk about the day ahead. At night you can read them a Bible or a story from their favorite books. For the older kids you can sit down and watch a series or play a game before bedtime.

Take photos

Wouldn’t you want to document your child’s growing moment?! If yes, a few selfies a day with your kids won’t hurt. Do this religiously and before you know it you have a year worth of pictures you can make into a photo book using Shutterfly. Priceless!

Exercise together

If it’s good for you, it’s good for them. We all know regular exercise adds years to your life and that’s more years you can spend together. While they may not fully understand the benefits, keep it fun so they may want to participate. You can opt for a fun dance routine workout or shooting hoops with older kids.

Cook together

While you may want to get over and done with this alone to save on time and put your feet up, think of how your child craves your attention and would love to spend time with you. Invite them to the kitchen and hang out as you cook or bake. In addition to bonding you are teaching them life skills.

Get silly

If you are especially reserved and a serious parent, imagine the sight it would be to behold when you laugh, play and get silly with your children. This shows how happy you are to spend time with them. Get the board games out or go for a physical activity like paintball, swimming or GP Karting with your older kids. For the younger ones you can paint, color, play doctor or create something together out of cardboards or playing bricks. It doesn’t have to be complex.

Rose and thorn

Use the rose and thorn approach attributed to Michelle Obama by taking a few minutes and asking each family what was the best and worst thing that happened to them on that day. Hence the rose and thorn of their day. This will ensure you spend a few minutes with your children every day.

Family movie nights

Schedule to have a movie night every fortnight or so and let the family members take turns in picking what they want to watch. Let it be a serious affair you do over the weekends with snacks, lights out and everyone snuggling up in the couch to enjoy. No need to spend money at the cinemas when you can stay in.

Tech time out

Difficult as it may be, have an hour or more dedicated to having all technology out of the way. Switch off the TV, keep the phone off or on silent and get rid of any other gadgets that can cause distractions. Your child will feel more valued and important as you catch up.
