Salt is essential for life. However, not all salt is created equal. Table salt, which is the common white salt we use in cooking, may be more harmful than beneficial, as it has been stripped of all its minerals and nutrients.
On the other hand, Himalayan pink salt which is superior to sea salt, contains 84 naturally occurring trace elements. Some of the benefits of using Himalayan salt include, better bone health, regulation of blood pressure and hormones, regulation of the water content throughout the body, and helps to reduce the signs of aging.
Himalayan salt also known as “white gold” is pinkish in colour and is available in some supermarkets and health shops.
Here are some ways to use Himalayan salt in your beauty routine:
1. Therapeutic salt bath
Every time we bath or shower, moisture is extracted from our skin. The only benefit that we derive from a regular bath is a clean body. However, when you bath with Himalayan salts, the minerals from the salts are absorbed by your skin, while toxins are released into the bath water. Put at least two cups of Himalayan salt in a bath of warm water.
After soaking yourself in the bath for 15-20 minutes, you’ll notice that your bath water appears murkier than usual. This is due to the detox effect. After the bath, rest for at least 30 minutes. This bath will improve the appearance of your skin as it stimulates circulation and aids in moisture retention. It is particularly useful for skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis and even insect bites.
2. DIY salt mouthwash
Make a salt solution also known as “sole” by filling a quarter of a glass jar with salt and then adding filtered water to the top. Let the mixture sit overnight. To use as a mouthwash, take 1 teaspoon of the sole and mix it with a little water in another glass.
Use this to gargle as usual. The salt helps to maintain a neutral pH in the mouth, thereby protecting your tooth enamel. The minerals such as calcium and magnesium also help to keep your teeth strong. When making sole, do not use any metal utensils as the salt water can oxidise metals.
3. DIY facial toner
Add two teaspoons of pink Himalayan salt to half a cup of water. Put in a glass or plastic container and shake well until the salt is dissolved. Salt is a natural antiseptic therefore this toner is great for oily skins.
This salt also attracts and holds water therefore it is a natural moisturiser, greatly benefiting dry skin. This toner is also a natural detoxifier as it infuses your skin with trace elements such as potassium, iodide, magnesium, and sodium, while simultaneously drawing out toxins.
Consult a medical professional if you are pregnant or have a chronic condition. If you have used Himalayan pink salt, what has been your experience?
