Real Madrid have ruled out Gareth Bale joining Manchester United as part of any deal for David De Gea.

Despite United's long-standing interest in Bale, Real do not want to involve the Wales star in negotiations for De Gea.

Instead Real are believed to have offered United defender Fabio Coentrao, who has interested the Old Trafford outfit in previous transfer windows.

However United are unlikely to want Coentrao as a makeweight now since signing Luke Shaw and because of Ashley Young's return to form.

United would want a straight cash deal if they reluctantly do agree to sell de Gea and Real claim they have quoted them a price of €40million (£28.6million).

United are determined to be strong in the face of Real's efforts to lure De Gea back to his native Madrid and have offered him new terms worth £200,000-a-week.

They have also spoken to his camp again to ask if there is anything more they can do.

Following Sunday's 1-1 draw with Arsenal, United boss Louis van Gaal admitted he could not force the player to stay, should he want to depart.

"It is not easy to choose between two great clubs. We would be very happy if he stays.", said the Dutchman.

"He is Spanish and his girlfriend is Spanish and he can go to another great club, so it is difficult for him to decide.

"David De Gea shall not leave us so easily because we are a great club and he wants to participate. He is still behind Casillas but now a Spanish club is coming."
