Aisha Wanjiku, Radio Presenter tells us why her car is a fun family ride

Your ride seems quite spotless what model and make is it?

It is a Mazda Demio, 2007 edition, which looks spotless because the previous owner was a lady who took keen care of it. You know what they say about ladies and cars.

What animal are you on the road, a cheetah or a tortoise?

(Laughs) One day I will become a cheetah. For now I am slowly learning and working on my driving speeds.

Which features do you love most about your car?

I love that it has economical engines which come in handy for fuel consumption and enough space for my day-to-day family needs.

The best destination you ever travelled to with your car is...?

We did a family road trip to Murang’a soon after we got the ride, and we look forward to a longer and more exciting road trip to Mombasa this holiday.

What is it like for you driving in Nairobi?

Thrilling but quite scary. I’m always impressed by drivers who overlap and leave the rest of us stuck in traffic... but with time, I shall be reigning the streets like they do.

What enhancements have you made to your car?

Getting the ride was quite an achievement for me so I decided to enjoy it like it was when I bought it. I hope to get her a spruced up sound system and cool rims in the course of next year.

What girly stuff do you carry around in your car?

I always have a change of shoes just in case I need instant glam and have meetings. I also have a lot of baby toys for my son to keep him busy during rides.

If you could change a few things about the car what would they be?

I would customise the seat covers, probably using leather. I would also get a funky sound system because I love my music too much. I’d probably also get bigger tyres to lift the car so it’s not too low.

If you were stranded on a highway with a flat tyre, what would you do?

Actually, that has happened before. I was stranded so I called my boyfriend up but since he was still at the office, he sent over a mechanic who came and sorted me out.

What is your ultimate dream car?

My dream car is a white Range Rover Vogue. It’s the definition of pure luxury and class thanks to edgy styling and speed. I love its powerful and masculine feel.

With the privilege of a siren on your car, what outrageous thing would you do?

I would keep it running and skip all the traffic everyday so that no one would overlap me in traffic.

Traffic can be a mess! What do you do to kill time when stuck in it?

I listen to music and sing along to my favourite tunes. It’s never a dull moment in traffic as long as my son is riding with me because we get to catch up and bond.

What song do you get carried away listening to in your car?

I don’t have specifics. Mostly, it depends on my mood and my music choice can range from R&B, dancehall to children’s rhymes because they all come in handy at some point.

What habit would you not tolerate from people you carry in your car?

People who litter the car should stop! I even have disposal bags in the car so that no one has an excuse to litter.

The worst driving experience you have had would be?

This one time, we were taking our son to school but ended up getting double punctures on Waiyaki Way. That must have been the longest morning because my son got to school hours late.

What one thing have you learned about driving that you were not taught in driving school?

That matatu drivers can transform your mood and leave you angry because they think they deserve leeway on the roads.

What annoying driving habits have you observed on Kenyan roads?

Away from overlapping, I dislike it when people drive with full lights at night. How do they expect the other drivers to see?

What advice would you give to a lady who wants to buy a car?

Don’t believe the hype and simply buy what you find practical for you. That way, you get to love your ride and treat it right.
