Ethnicity in public universities is no longer news in Kenya. Instead of acting as epitomes of civility and national unity, the highest institutions of learning have been turned into tribal cash cows where tribesmen cut deals and ensure managers are members of the community where these campuses are situated. This way, the managers turn the institution into an employment bureau and dish out jobs for their kin in total disregard to professionalism and quality of services expected of them.
Disbursement of Government money to public primary and secondary schools is being done late. Sometimes cash reaches the schools in three months month after schools open. This causes friction with suppliers and could be a recipe for mismanagement of funds and corruption in schools.
Late disbursement of cash by the Higher Education Loans Board, is also common in the universities.
Indiscipline in schools has reached fever pitch. The law in the country rightly banned all forms of corporal punishment in schools. The Ministry of Education replaced 'the power of the cane' with guidance and counseling. However, the expected counseling sessions are not taking place in schools.
These issues clearly show that the education sector lacks selfless and visionary leadership. It is the high time the Government reformed the sector to improve the quality of education.
