Albinos assured procured sunscreen safe

By STANLEY MWAHANGA

MOMBASA, KENYA: The National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) has defended the quality of the 19,500 bottles of sunscreen that were recently procured for distribution to albinos.

The council denied claims that the lotion applied to protect albinos from harmful ultraviolet rays is of questionable quality.

NCPD programme’s officer in-charge of albinism empowerment on the sunscreen programme Alex Munyere said in Mombasa Sunday that reports questioning the quality of the sunscreen were misinformed.

Munyere said the procured sunscreen, which is already in the country, is ready for distribution to at least 2,576 registered persons with albinism for free. The lotion would be distributed through county hospitals.

Munyere disclosed that the sunscreens had received a clean bill from the Kenya Pharmacists and Poisons Board and the Kenya Bureau of Standards, which had set the benchmark on the quality of the product.

“Before we procured the sunscreen, we consulted several Government agencies that cleared the product as they did not contain any harmful material,” said Munyere, who was speaking in Mombasa.
