The Government ought to fund clubs to continental tournaments. The football season is about to end and local clubs that will represent the country at the continental level next year will be known.

Next season two clubs will represent the country in the prestigious Confederations Cup and the Champions league.

The sad thing is that Kenyan clubs have not done well in these tournaments over the years and one reason is lack of good money.

Considering that when local clubs go out they carry the country’s flag, it will not be asking too much if the Government came in and supported this noble cause.

It used to happen in the 1980s when Kenyan clubs like AFC leopards and Gor Mahia would get government support to take part in such events.

The Government has shown a lot of support for sports by rewarding athletes who do well but now is the time for it to do more by funding all clubs that would be taking part at the continental level.

Going for continental football is a very expensive undertaking which mostly depletes the entire annual budget of teams even before the season starts.

That is why most clubs that have represented the country at this level struggle throughout the season after playing one or two matches in these championships.

It is high time the Government through the Ministry of Sports considered such a proposal for the good of the sport.
