Your skin is the biggest organ on your body, so taking good care of it is important since it protects all your internal organs. In terms of vanity, this is the part of your body that is the most visible to other people. You always want to make sure that you look presentable before facing the world!

Being too rough

Your skin spans over your entire body, making it susceptible to damage. A few causes of skin damage are Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, physical exfoliation and prolonged rubbing and tugging.

You should always be gentle with your face. Always pat-dry your face with a paper towel or clean face towel. Rubbing your face over a long period of time will weaken your skin’s elasticity, speeding up the ageing process.

When applying eye cream, use your ring finger to dab it into the skin around your eyes, because it’s the gentlest finger on your hand.

Physical exfoliation on your face causes micro-tears on your skin’s surface. Using facial scrubs regularly will reduce your skin’s elasticity over time, not to mention the inflammation and hyperpigmentation it wreaks on your skin. Chemical exfoliation is much gentler. Always follow up a chemical exfoliant with a good sunscreen to protect your skin.

Change your pillow cover at least every 4 – 6 days (Image: Jenna Christina on Unsplash)

Sleeping on a dirty pillow cover

A dirty pillow cover is something that a number of people overlook. Your pillow cover collects oil and dirt from your face, and if not washed regularly, your skin reabsorbs all that bacteria which can cause breakouts.

This also applies to your sheets because body acne is a thing too. Change your pillow cover at least every 4 – 6 days, and flip it over at some point in-between washes because the underside of it will be cleaner than the part that you place your head on.

Using makeup wipes wrongly

If you wear a full face of makeup regularly, makeup wipes alone will not get everything off. By the time you’ve wiped off majority of your makeup, your skin would have had to go through unnecessary pulling and tugging. This is too rough for the delicate skin on your face, and especially around your eyes.

Instead, dissolve your makeup with an oil, i.e. almond oil. Massage it into your skin, and around your eyes if you have waterproof makeup. After, gently wipe the oil off with a makeup wipe. This reduces friction between your face and the wipe. A better alternative to this would be to invest in a good oil cleanser than can be rinsed off.
