When we think Vitamin C, the first fruits to come to mind are lemons and oranges. However, the guava has more Vitamin C in it than oranges and lemons. To be more specific, a guava fruit weighing 100 grams has over 200mgs of Vitamin C (380 per cent of the required daily value) while an orange has 53.2mgs.

A guava is called pera (plural mapera) in Kiswahili. Its benefits include lowering blood sugar, aiding in weight loss, boosting heart health and benefiting one's digestive system. Guava leaves are used in many countries as a herbal tea. The leaf extract is also used as a supplement and in hair and beauty treatments.

Guavas are available in major green grocery markets and some major supermarkets. They are best stored in the fridge when ripe and can keep for up to four days. To get the most nutrition from a fruit, eat it first thing in the morning, before meals or as a snack. Eating fruit after a workout helps in refuelling your body.
