Former students of Kapsabet Girls National High School in Nandi have launched an ambitious plan to construct a Sh70 million dormitory after realising that the institution’s facilities are overstretched.

Court of Appeal Judge Fatuma Sichale and Kenya Dairy Board managing director Margaret Kibogy are among the school’s high-profile former students who are set to take part in a series of fundraising activities in an initiative dubbed ‘Road to Sh70 million.’

They are seeking to build a 600-bed capacity through fundraising events that comprise road walks, home-coming events and a dinner dance. The group, led by Hellen Yego, said the school’s former students are spread across Kenya.

“We have been supporting needy students to raise school fees. A hundred per cent transition has led to an increase in the number of students, and we have decided to set up a 600-bed dormitory at a cost of Sh70 million,” Yego, who is the group’s chair, said yesterday. [Stephen Rutto]

Yego said they are targeting at least 1,500 former Kapsabet Girls students spread across Kenya and in foreign countries, to participate in the series of fundraising activities.

The former students have lined up a series of events in a bid to give back to the former school.

According to Yego, the school had constructed a makeshift dormitory following a surge in student numbers. On October 22, the alumnae have planned a homecoming that will bring together the former students at the school.

“All former students will be assembling at the school for a homecoming event that will be championed by Dr Wamuyu Mugo from Nyeri,” Yego said.
