MURANGA, KENYA: A primary school teacher hacked his wife to death in Kandara district in Murang’a County claiming she had joined a devil-worshipping cult.
The accused, a former teacher a Kamahuha zone in Maragua constituency, allegedly used an axe to slit the throat of Rosaline Wambui, 27, killing her on the spot.
The incident occurred at their Karigu-ini village near Kenol market on Saturday morning.
The couple’s four-year-old son who witnessed the incident revealed to neighbours how his father slit her mother’s throat before fleeing to unknown place.
Irate neighbours rushed to the couple’s house breaking the door only to be met by a badly mutilated body lying on a pool of blood.
Fearing public anger, the assailant presented himself to an Administration Police officer attached at Kenol District headquarters.
Murang’a South OCPD Mr Antony Onyango confirmed the incident saying the father of three surrendered himself to police.
Onyango said the assailant also surrendered to the police officers an axe that was used in committing the crime.
“We have a suspect in police custody and are talking to him with a view of preferring a murder count upon completion of investigations,” said Onyango.
The incident occurred six days after he returned home only to meet his wife and mother who lived in the same compound embroiled in a protracted domestic dispute.
Area chief Mr Francis Mwaura confided to The Standard that the suspect returned home on Monday last week from Kisii where he was currently teaching.
The chief said his office had tried on several occasion to reconcile the mother in law and the late daughter in law without success.
