Health Ministry says SHA claims increased by Sh88M in a week

The Ministry of Health has reported a significant increase in the number of people registered with the recently rolled out Social Health Authority (SHA). Principal Secretary Harry Kimtai said the new health authority has stabilised, noting an increase of claims by Sh88 million compared to last week. Data from the updated SHA portal indicates that claims have increased from Sh12 million last week to Sh100 million. Backing up the data, Kimtai said health facilities empanelled with SHA have confirmed the stabilisation of the health insurance platform. He also expressed the government's commitment to onboarding more facilities and addressing financial challenges facing the transition to SHA. "We are doing our best to empanel health facilities to the Social Health Authority platform so that they can administer quality health services to our people. We are working with the National Treasury to release funds amounting to more than Sh3 billion by next week so that hospitals can offset the outstanding debts owed to them," said PS Kimtai. According to SHA data, 1,442 healthcare providers have been contracted to offer services to registered members, while over 12.8 million Kenyans have registered. Kimtai also added that steady claims growth has since been reported in the public, private, and faith-based institutions facilities as a result of the increase in engagements by registered members. Reports from the portal ranking the facilities indicate that Kenyatta National Hospital leads with 427 claims, which is equivalent to Sh12.8 million. Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Uasin Gishu County and Rift Valley General Provincial Hospital in Nakuru County follow closely with 233 claims worth Sh8.4 million and 171 claims worth Sh4.4 million respectively. Further, the ranking of level four facilities indicates that the Texas Cancer Centre in Nairobi leads with 75 claims totalling Sh2.9 million. Comparably, Rapha Dialysis and Diagnostic Centre in Uasin Gishu leads in Level Three facilities with 121 claims that are worth Sh1.3 million.
