Suspected Mpox case reported in West Pokot

The County Government of West Pokot has reported a suspected case of Mpox, sparking health surveillance efforts and precautionary measures in the region.

The county on Sunday said a 38-year-old man from Pokatusa in North Pokot Sub-county was admitted to Kacheliba Sub-County Hospital on Saturday after developing symptoms consistent with Mpox.

The patient first sought medical care on August 9, 2025, at a local facility in Nakuyen before his condition worsened. By August 12, he exhibited fever, sore throat, headache, muscle pain, backache, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes.

According to the statement, the patient has since been placed in isolation at Kacheliba Hospital, where he is receiving specialized medical attention. Health officials revealed that the patient had recently traveled to Krigi in Uganda, raising cross-border health concerns.

Samples have been collected and sent to the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) in Nairobi for confirmatory testing.

Nicholas Siwatom, Director of Public Communication, said the county's Disease Surveillance Team has traced and isolated four close contacts, who are under strict observation.

"We are managing the patient under strict infection prevention protocols, and the situation is under control," said Siwatom.

The county urged residents to remain calm and follow preventive guidelines, including regular handwashing, avoiding close contact with symptomatic individuals, and seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms appear.

Siwatom said the county has also appealed to the public to cooperate with health workers during surveillance and avoid spreading misinformation.

"The County Government of West Pokot remains committed to safeguarding the health and safety of our citizens. Timely updates will be provided once test results are confirmed," the statement added.
