Kenya granted permanent observer status by OAS

Kenya has formally been granted permanent observer status to the Organisation of American States (OAS), a regional forum for political discussion and policy analysis in the wider American region.

The decision by the Permanent Council, a committee of representatives from member states, was adopted following a recommendation by the OAS General Secretariat's Department of External and Institutional Relations.

"The Council resolves to grant the Republic of Kenya the status of permanent observer to the Organization of American States (OAS), in accordance with the provisions of resolutions AG/RES. 50 (I-O/71) of the General Assembly and CP/RES. 407 (573/84) of this Council Permanent," the Permanent Council said in a statement dated June 5.

As an observer, Kenya will be expected to endorse a permanent observer as well as promote the Organization's efforts to strengthen democracy, defend human rights, ensure a multidimensional approach to security, and promote integral development.

The country becomes the first in the East African region to hold such status.

So far, OAS has granted over 70 states and organisations with permanent observer status.
